About the Assessment

What does this assessment measure?

The Navigate Transition Assessment measures three critical dimensions that determine your capacity to successfully navigate a major life or career transition:

  • Motivation: Your drive and energy for the transition
  • Learning: Your capacity to acquire new skills and knowledge
  • Identity: Your sense of belonging and self in the new context

It identifies which dimension is your "constraint" - the primary factor limiting your overall transition capacity.

How long does the assessment take?

The assessment takes approximately 5-7 minutes to complete. There are 15 questions total - 5 questions for each of the three dimensions (Motivation, Learning, and Identity).

Is my data confidential?

Yes, your assessment data is stored securely and confidentially. Only you can access your individual results through your personal account. Aggregate data may be used for research purposes, but individual responses are never shared or identified.

Can I take the assessment more than once?

Absolutely! In fact, we encourage you to retake the assessment periodically as you work through your transition. This allows you to:

  • Track your progress over time
  • See how your constraint changes
  • Measure the impact of your development efforts
  • Identify new areas that need attention

Understanding Your Results

What is a "constraint" and why does it matter?

Your constraint is your lowest-scoring dimension - the area that's most holding you back. It matters because:

  • Improving your constraint has the biggest impact on your overall transition capacity
  • Your constraint explains why you might feel stuck, even when other things seem fine
  • Focusing on your constraint is more effective than trying to improve everything at once

Think of it like a chain - the weakest link determines the chain's strength. Your constraint is that weakest link in your transition capacity.

What do the traffic light colors mean?

We use a traffic light system to help you prioritize:

  • 🔴 RED (0-3.9): Priority area - This is your constraint and needs immediate attention
  • 🟡 AMBER (4.0-6.9): Monitor - Room for improvement, but not your primary focus
  • 🟢 GREEN (7.0-10): Strong - This area is working well for you
What's a good Transition Capacity Score?

There's no universal "good" score - it depends on your starting point and your goals. However:

  • Scores are calculated by multiplying your three dimension scores (0-10 each)
  • Total scores range from 0 to 1,000
  • Having balanced scores (e.g., 7-7-7 = 343) is often better than having one very low score (e.g., 9-9-2 = 162)
  • Focus on improvement over time rather than comparing to others

The most important thing is identifying your constraint and working to improve it.

Why are my scores multiplied instead of added?

Multiplication reveals what addition hides - your constraint matters more than your strengths. When scores are multiplied:

  • A single low score dramatically reduces your overall capacity
  • This mirrors real life - you can have all the motivation and learning in the world, but if you don't feel like you belong, your transition will struggle
  • It shows why addressing your constraint is so powerful

See the "How Scoring Works" page for detailed examples of why multiplication is used.

How often should I retake the assessment?

We recommend retaking the assessment:

  • After making significant efforts to address your constraint (e.g., 4-6 weeks)
  • When you experience a major shift or change in your transition
  • Every 2-3 months during active transition periods
  • When you want to check if a new constraint has emerged

Avoid taking it too frequently (daily or weekly) as meaningful change takes time to develop.

The Three Dimensions Explained

What is Motivation and why does it matter?

Motivation is your drive and emotional energy for the transition. It's about whether you have the fuel to push through challenges.

Low motivation might show up as:

  • Feeling drained or stuck rather than energized
  • Avoiding taking action on your transition
  • Struggling to maintain momentum
  • Questioning whether it's worth the effort

When motivation is your constraint, you might know what to do but lack the drive to do it.

What is Learning and why does it matter?

Learning is your capacity to acquire the new skills and knowledge you need for your transition.

Low learning capacity might show up as:

  • Struggling to develop needed competencies
  • Feeling overwhelmed by what you need to learn
  • Not making progress in building new skills
  • Avoiding situations where you need to demonstrate new capabilities

When learning is your constraint, you want to move forward but lack the skills or knowledge to do so effectively.

What is Identity and why does it matter?

Identity is your sense of self and belonging in the new context. It's about whether you can see yourself fitting in and being authentic.

Low identity alignment might show up as:

  • Feeling like you don't belong or fit in
  • Questioning whether this is really "you"
  • Struggling to see yourself succeeding in the new context
  • Feeling like you're pretending or being inauthentic

When identity is your constraint, you might have the skills and motivation, but something feels fundamentally "off" about the fit.

Can I have more than one constraint?

Technically, your constraint is your single lowest-scoring dimension. However:

  • If two dimensions have very similar low scores, both may be limiting you
  • Your constraint can change as you improve - addressing one constraint may reveal another
  • Multiple amber scores suggest you have room for improvement across several areas

Start with your lowest score, but be aware that transitions often involve working on multiple dimensions over time.
